What an epoch is
An epoch is a fixed run of slots. Stake activation, deactivation and staking rewards are settled at the boundary, so stake changes you make mid-epoch take effect at a boundary, not at once.

This Solana epoch countdown shows the current mainnet epoch, how far through it the chain is, and an estimated time and UTC date for the next one. It reads live slot timing and ticks locally between refreshes.

The countdown advances once per second from the last fetch and refetches every 60 seconds. It is an estimate: slot time drifts.
An epoch is a fixed run of slots. Stake activation, deactivation and staking rewards are settled at the boundary, so stake changes you make mid-epoch take effect at a boundary, not at once.
The page reads the current position from getEpochInfo and the average slot time from getRecentPerformanceSamples. The estimate is slots remaining times that average. Slot time moves with network load and leader performance, so the end time drifts, usually by minutes and sometimes more.
After each fetch the page advances the slot position once per second using the measured slot time, then fetches again every 60 seconds and snaps back to the chain. If a fetch fails, the countdown keeps running from the last good data and says so.
It has no validator, stake, or reward data, and it does not predict anything beyond the next boundary. It is a timing estimate, not a schedule.
It ends when the slot index reaches the slots in the epoch. The clock time is an estimate from the average slot time, so treat the UTC time as a window of several minutes, not a deadline.
Each refresh brings a new slot position and a new average slot time. If blocks were slower or faster than the last average, the remaining time moves with them.
The page computes it from the slots per epoch and the current slot time. It is shown under the readout and varies a little from one refresh to the next.
No. Newly delegated stake becomes active at an epoch boundary, and the same applies to deactivation. The staking reference linked above has the rules.
