An MCP server exposes selected tools or resources through the Model Context Protocol. Production work still requires authentication, authorization, input validation, rate limits, auditability, and explicit action boundaries.
It fits when one or more MCP-compatible clients need governed access to the same tools or resources. A direct API integration may be smaller when there is only one stable client and workflow.
